The Story of the Olive Tree
According to an old myth, that once the Goddess of Wisdom-Athena and the God of the Seas-Poseidon took part in a contest set by Zeus-the God of all Gods. The reward for the contest was the control of the biggest metropolis of ancient Greece. The task of the contest was to create the most beneficial gift for mankind. While Poseidon created a large seawater lake near the city, Athena created the olive tree. Athena then explained that this miraculous tree will heal the wounds by its ointment, feed the man by its fruit and enlighten the dark nights by its oil. Zeus very understandably gave the metropolis to Athena, thus the city of Athens was born. Centuries later, during a raid on Athens, the Persians are rumoured to have found that particular sacred olive tree and burned it: but to their avail the tree fought back by growing fresh shoots, thus also earning a reputation as the tree immortal. There are some 800-1500 year old olive trees still bearing fruit in Bodrum-Yal›kavak region. Olive tree throughout history is associated with wealth, wellbeing and peace in all cultures. Olive tree is also one of the 7 plants that are mentioned in all of the three holy books.
